Trump pardons DC police officers convicted in fatal 2020 pursuit of Karon Hylton-Brown

Trump has pardoned two D.C. police officers who were convicted after one chased a man riding a moped, which ultimately led to his death, and the other helped cover it up.

In an executive order on Wednesday, Trump granted a “full and unconditional pardon” to Lt. Andrew Zabavsky and officer Terence Sutton.

In October of 2020, Sutton pursued 20-year-old Karon Hylton-Brown, who was violating traffic laws by riding a rental scooter without a helmet and on a sidewalk. According to the Justice Department, Sutton followed Hylton-Brown down a narrow alleyway without his lights or siren on and purposefully sped up behind him.

Hylton-Brown was struck by another uninvolved car as he drove out of the alley. He died in a local hospital two days later.

You know why we're fucked as an electorate?

Because in western Pennsylvania and the national sporting press as a whole, a goddamn pro football coach is getting a thousand times the scrutiny and criticism as the angry orange idiot has in a decade...

No amount of overly optimistic disinformation about Tomlin's playoff record would sway them...

Nor would Tomlin promoting a conspiracy about the league not wanting him to win...

Nor would Tomlin swearing up and down for year that he actually WON the last four Super Bowls but they got stolen from him...

Nor would Tomlin suing the referees because they wouldn't "find him more points"

Nor would Tomlin sending an angry mob to NFL headquarters in New York...

Nor would Tomlin accusing the Baltimore Ravens of having a bunch of undocumented immigrants on their roster...

I guess my point is people really can see through the words and compare what's being said versus the evidence, results and hard data when they WANT TO... They just choose not to when it comes to Donnie. Maybe we need to turn politics into sports😐

Sudan's biggest refugee camp was already struck with famine. Now it's being shelled

LAGOS, Nigeria — Sudan's largest refugee camp — which hosts at least half a million people, thousands of whom are suffering from famine — has been attacked by artillery shelling almost daily for two weeks. More than 80 people have been killed and close to 400 injured in the Zamzam camp in Sudan's besieged western region of Darfur, according to local media.

Displaced people residing in the camp and aid groups including Doctors Without Borders (MSF) have blamed the constant shelling on the Rapid Support Forces or RSF, the Sudanese paramilitary group locked in a brutal civil war with Sudan's army since April 2023.

The siege has sparked a new humanitarian catastrophe, with the attacks preventing already very limited quantities of aid into Zamzam, and leaving its few medical facilities overwhelmed. It marks an alarming turning point in a region overrun by violence and atrocities against civilians, with mounting evidence from local and international human rights groups of ethnic cleansing committed by the RSF in Darfur.

Although it is overshadowed by wars in the Middle East and Ukraine, Sudan's 20-month conflict has killed as many as 150,000 people, according to some estimates. It has led to the world's worst displacement crisis, affecting 1 in 5 of the country's prewar population. The U.S. is among those accusing the RSF of ethnic cleansing, and also accuses Sudan's military of war crimes. In a statement last December, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said: "Since the outbreak of fighting on April 15, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have unleashed horrific violence, death, and destruction across Sudan. Civilians have borne the brunt of this needless conflict."

Scientists debate fleeing America because of Trump

It was not easy for Dr. Kevin Trenberth to leave the United States. An esteemed climate scientist who has published more than 600 articles on climatology, Trenberth spent more than four decades of his life in America, first teaching at the University of Illinois before joining the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), where he eventually became a distinguished scholar.

Yet by September 2019, the New Zealand native decided to return home because he’d had enough of America under President Donald Trump. Trenberth has long been a fierce critic of Trump, but now things were impacting him personally.

“I cannot go to NSF [the National Science Foundation] for research funds because NCAR is base funded that way,” Trenberth wrote in a note to himself at the time. “Nor has it been fruitful to garner funds internally, and the external grants, especially with NOAA [National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration] dried up after 2012 when NOAA put forward a proposal for a climate service but thoroughly messed it up, and Lamar Smith [R-Texas, then-chair of the Science Committee in the House] not only killed it but cut research funds for climate by 30%

The ol' bait-and-switch....

President-elect Trump on the campaign trail made grandiose promises to voters to bring down costs quickly, to end the war in Ukraine before he even took office and to use tariffs to bolster the U.S. economy and manufacturing.

Since winning November’s election, Trump has indicated delivering on those promises may not be as simple as advertised. Trump in a recent “Meet the Press” interview said he could not guarantee tariffs would not lead to higher consumer prices.

He acknowledged in a Time magazine interview for his Person of the Year honor that it’s difficult to bring down the cost of groceries once they’ve gone up.

And in his first post-election press conference from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Fla., Trump suggested ending the war in Ukraine would be more difficult than easing tensions in the Middle East...

That time when a Trumper threatened to bomb my workplace...

Minor will be charged with making dozens of racist threats to HBCUs, FBI says

The FBI is broadening its outreach to historically Black colleges and universities at the same time the agency’s director announced that one minor will be charged with making dozens of racist threats earlier this year against more than 50 HBCUs across the country.

“We have worked with state prosecutors to ensure that that individual is charged under various other state offenses,” FBI Director Christopher Wray told the House committee on Homeland Security Tuesday, noting that the accused minor won’t be charged federally because of limitations for juveniles.

Threats against HBCUs peaked in January and February when at least 57 colleges received bomb threats via phone calls, e-mails, instant messages and anonymous online posts, according to the FBI.

More than a dozen schools had to lock down or postpone classes on the first day of Black History Month in February after at least 18 HBCUs received bomb threats.
