False reports of explosives found in a car near a Trump rally spread online
Source: AP
PHILIP MARCELO Updated 11:53 AM CDT, September 18, 2024
NEW YORK (AP) Law enforcement officials on Long Island worked quickly on Wednesday to publicly knock down social media posts falsely reporting that explosives had been found in a car near former President Donald Trumps planned rally in New York.
The false reports of an explosive began circulating hours before the Republican presidential nominees campaign event at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, just days after he was apparently the target of a second possible assassination attempt.
Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said police questioned and detained a person who may have been training a bomb detection dog, near the site of the rally and falsely reported explosives being found.
Lt. Scott Skrynecki, a spokesperson for the county police, said in follow-up messages that the person, who police have not yet identified, was a civilian and not a member of a law enforcement agency...................

When two women told the FBI that White House staff secretary Rob Porter had abused them, Porter joined a line of Trumpworld men accused of choking, grabbing, threatening, hitting, or otherwise abusing women.
At least five administration and campaign figures (including Trump himself) have been the subject of abuse allegations. Rather than treat such allegations with gravity, Trump and his team have chosen to ignore them, to fire back at the women on Twitter, or to parrot mens assurances of their innocence over womens reports.
On Friday, for instance, Trump reminded Americans that Porter maintains his innocence, and said, we certainly wish him well and its a tough time for him...........................................
The Trump camp has embraced a whole list of men accused of abuse
Porter, who played the pivotal White House role of managing the flow of documents and memos across the presidents desk, announced his resignation on Wednesday. Two of his ex-wives publicly reported that he had abused them. Porters first wife, Colbie Holderness, says he kicked, punched, and choked her. She provided the Intercept with photographs of bruises she says Porter inflicted on her. The former White House staffers second wife told the Daily Mail that he dragged her by her shoulders out of the shower to yell at her; in an April 2017 blog post, she wrote, in my home, the abuse was insidious...............................

GOP senator insults Arab American witness at hate crimes hearing
Source: The hill
by Juliann Ventura - 09/17/24 6:13 PM ET
Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) told an Arab American witness that she should hide [her] head in a bag after repeatedly asking her if she supported Hamas and Hezbollah during a Tuesday congressional hearing.
You should hide your head in a bag, Kennedy told Maya Berry, the executive director of the Arab American Institute, who was adamant she did not support Hamas or violence by any group.
Berry said she found the line of questioning exceptionally disappointing.
I think its exceptionally disappointing that youre looking at an Arab American witness before you and saying, You support Hamas,' she said.
Berry testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee alongside witnesses from the National Jewish Advocacy Center and Bard Center for the Study of Hate. The conversation touched on antisemitism and anti-Muslim hate, specifically on college campuses.
You support Hamas, do you not? Kennedy asked Berry.
Oddly enough, Im going to say thank you for that question because it demonstrates the purpose of our hearing today, she said, before he interrupted, asking for a yes or no answer.

WASHINGTON (AP) Two decades ago, when a Democratic presidential nominee wouldnt dream of endorsing gay marriage, a newly elected district attorney named Kamala Harris was performing one of the first same-sex unions in the United States.
It was the so-called Winter of Love in San Francisco. The mayor at the time, Gavin Newsom, had directed the county clerk to approve gay marriages even though there was no law on the books recognizing them. His act of rebellion prompted a bipartisan political backlash, but Harris had no hesitation.
You could tell she was so overwhelmed and had so much joy about performing this ceremony, said Brad Witherspoon, whose marriage to Raymond Cobane was officiated by Harris on Valentines Day 2004.
The moment represents a stark difference between Harris and all previous Democratic presidential nominees, who didnt begin their political careers as gay marriage supporters. Four years after the Winter of Love, the issue was still off the table during the partys primary. And it took another four years for Democratic President Barack Obama, running for reelection against Republican Mitt Romney, to back gay marriage.
For LGBTQ leaders, Harris history validates their deep support for the Democratic nominee.
Its not just that she held a position in support of fundamental equality for gay and lesbian couples. A lot of politicians take positions and hold positions, said Chad Griffin, former head of the Human Rights Campaign, who is on Harris national fundraising committee. Fewer actually roll up their sleeves and use their power to make lives better....................
