Ambien maker responds to Roseanne Barr: 'Racism is not a known side effect'

https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2018/may/30/roseanne-ambien-racism-tweet-side-effect-response-sanofi

The drug manufacturer Sanofi has clarified that one of its most popular medications, the sedative Ambien, does not cause racism. Sanofi tweeted: “While all pharmaceutical treatments have side effects, racism is not a known side effect of any Sanofi medication.”

The company’s statement came after Roseanne Barr partly blamed the drug for the series of racist tweets which led to her ABC sitcom being cancelled.

People of all races, religions and nationalities work at Sanofi every day to improve the lives of people around the world. While all pharmaceutical treatments have side effects, racism is not a known side effect of any Sanofi medication.

In Britain, Austerity Is Changing Everything

My dear UK DU'ers, I knew things were bad, but not THIS bad. This is a very good article.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/28/world/europe/uk-austerity-poverty.html

PRESCOT, England — A walk through this modest town in the northwest of England amounts to a tour of the casualties of Britain’s age of austerity.

The old library building has been sold and refashioned into a glass-fronted luxury home. The leisure center has been razed, eliminating the public swimming pool. The local museum has receded into town history. The police station has been shuttered.

Now, as the local government desperately seeks to turn assets into cash, Browns Field, a lush park in the center of town, may be doomed, too. At a meeting in November, the council included it on a list of 17 parks to sell to developers.

“Everybody uses this park,” says Jackie Lewis, who raised two children in a red brick house a block away. “This is probably our last piece of community space. It’s been one after the other. You just end up despondent.”

Ever run into the "spitting image" of a family member ?

This guy could be my brother, easily, at age 28:

It's just uncanny. Every time I see him, he reminds me so strongly of my older brother, who is now 63.

You also ?

Mental Health Support Group: 4 days on Lithium Carbonate ER

For now, the dosage is only 300 mg at night. In a few days, the dosage goes to 300 mg twice a day. From my research on Lithium and its usage in depression treatment augmentation, the dosage can go as high as 1800 mg a day. At this point, I have no idea what my doc is going to do with my dosage. Of course, tomorrow I will go get my first lithium blood level as well as a creatinine level.

Since I'm not Bipolar I or Bipolar II, I have no idea what to expect from this med. Improvement in depressive symptoms overall and prevention of severe depressive episodes is my best idea so far. As far as *my* target symptom of "interpersonal rejection sensitivity" goes, I'm pretty pessimistic that any psychotropic med can "cure" this or substantially alleviate it, when it has very deep environmental roots for me. If Lithium, at any dosage, accomplishes this miracle, I will loudly sing my doctor's praises and those of Lithium as well. We'll see.

So far, I'm just adjusting to it with no real benefit seen so far. Then again, I'm only on 300 mg and not 1800 mg (if he goes that high).

All the best to everyone with your treatment. I highly recommend doing research, because knowledge is power and I think it helps you to cooperate with your doctor instead of being fearful or hesitant.

Florida's ban on smokable medical marijuana ruled unconstitutional

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/politics/political-pulse/os-smokable-medical-marijuana-ban-20180525-story.html

The Florida ban that prevents medical marijuana patients from smoking the stuff has gone up in smoke.

Leon County Circuit Court Judge Karen Gievers ruled Friday that the ban on smokable cannabis is unconstitutional. Florida’s Department of Health said in a statement it has appealed the ruling, which will impose an automatic stay.

Gievers wrote in her 22-page ruling that Floridians “have the right to use the form of medical marijuana for treatment of their debilitating medical conditions as recommended by their certified physicians, including the use of smokable marijuana in private places.”

Ben Pollara, who runs the nonprofit medical marijuana advocacy group Florida for Care, said the ruling is a big victory for patients and voters.

'We're closed!': Trump vents his anger over immigration at homeland security secretary

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/were-closed-trump-directs-his-anger-over-immigration-at-homeland-security-secretary/2018/05/24/4bd686ec-5abc-11e8-8b92-45fdd7aaef3c_story.html?utm_term=.54adbe542cf9

President Trump began berating Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen in the Oval Office earlier this spring, according to administration officials, griping about her performance and blaming her for a surge in illegal border crossings.

Chief of Staff John F. Kelly, who installed her in the job, jumped in to defend her.

The two men then sparred over Nielsen as she silently watched. At one point, Trump noted the border numbers were lower under Kelly and wondered aloud why Nielsen could not perform as well, according to these officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe the private meeting.

As illegal crossings are once more on the rise and Trump hears a cascade of criticism from conservative allies, Nielsen finds herself on the receiving end of the president’s visceral anger about immigration, seeing the issue as the reason he won in 2016 and a key to his politicking ahead of the midterm elections.

Mental Health support group: anxiety about our country

This is the Mental Health Support group. Nasty, unkind, abrasive, and uncalled-for comments are not welcome here.

I'm putting this here instead of GD because, well, GD is GD. Always at least one person has to get nasty.

Am I the only one who worries a bit that either 1) Mueller find no smoking guns or 2) Mueller will find a smoking gun, either indict Trump (unlikely ?) or at least make a full report to Congress on his finding a smoking gun of Trump's treason and illegal behavior, and that Trump will NOT be impeached and convicted and refuse to leave office ? I am still convinced that Trump will fire Mueller via someone at DOJ, but I think whoever replaces Rosenstein would appoint someone very competent in his place (or at least I damn sure hope so). I think he would have to fire Rosenstein and maybe a few others to finally get someone willing to be a tool of injustice.

Worst case scenario, this nightmare continues until November 2020 and he's tossed out of office. An even WORSE case scenario is that, god forbid, he is re-elected AGAIN. I really don't want to cope with the Liar and Narcissistic-Sociopath-in-Chief until 2024, ugh ugh ugh.

When the Republicans go after Mueller, it does cause me a bit of angst. This was not the case, generally, with Watergate in 1972-1974. There was more respect for the legal process back then by Republicans, but of course there was no internet back then or 24 hour news cycle.

Sigh. If you don't have these anxieties, that's fine. I just wanted to compare notes, so to speak. All the best to all of you.
