Kansas attorney general sues to block state-funded abortions

TOPEKA, Kan. – Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline has sued Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and two other state officials, seeking to block state-funded abortions and establish under Kansas law that life begins at conception.

The lawsuit, filed yesterday, claims abortion violates Section 1 of the Kansas Constitution, which guarantees all people "equal and inalienable natural rights, among which are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

The Kansas House of Representatives ordered the lawsuit three years ago. Abortion opponents hope eventually to challenge the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision by the U.S. Supreme Court, which legalized abortion.
