6'2" tall, 200 pound guy outside the house, while the other kid is beating on the door, at midnight, with the kid having something in his hand, and after the shooter's house had previously been shot at.

Please give a plausible scenario where to would have been a GOOD thing happening to the homeowner...

The kids went out to scare the neighbors, and succeeded. If they were selling popcorn or girl scout cookies in the middle of the day, their conduct would have just been rude. At night, with NO POSSIBLE justification for the kids to be there, it was reasonable.
