(Nashville, Tennessee) The Southern Baptist Convention is stepping up its opposition to homosexuality with a formal "declaration on marriage" and demands that all candidates for office in 2004 sign a pledge to support a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.

The denomination already has endorsed a longstanding statement calling homosexuality a sin, but church leaders say that needs to be toughened in light of last summer's Supreme Court ruling striking down sodomy laws (story), and Sunday's consecration of a gay bishop in the Episcopal faith (story).

"We want to make sure there is no confusion about what the Bible says on this issue," said Richard Land, who heads the convention's ethics and religious liberties commission.
