Bush Claims Credit for Upbeat Economic News

Bush said on Saturday the U.S. economy was on an upward trajectory and attributed the improvement to his tax cuts, as a raft of upbeat economic news eased the pressure on his administration amid a rising death toll in Iraq.

``Our economy is on a rising road,'' he said, citing three straight monthly gains in workers on U.S. payrolls, a drop in the unemployment rate and a surge in gross domestic product to 7.2 percent, the biggest rise since 1984, as evidence of the gathering economic strength.

Bush, who is up for re-election next year, said his massive tax-cuts, the centerpiece of his economic agenda, had been aimed at spurring consumer spending and business investment.

``We're now seeing that happen,'' he said in the radio address.
