This "us v. them" repetition is one of the hallmarks of propaganda that supports a coup. There have been some fascinating books written about it, especially the study by Edward Luttwak (info on him is below). Even though Christians are around 90% of the U.S. population, there needs to be a false sense of siege, so that the people can take refuge in the group that will protect Christianity from those bent on destroying it (even though the whole idea of siege is pure fantasy).

Really fascinating. Here's an excerpt from John Dee's lengthy essay on Luttwak's theories, as those theories played out in the 2000 election:


Through this constant refrain , the Bush campaign sought to create an image of themselves as protectors of these sacred tenets of the nation. This is fully consistent with Luttwak's propaganda strategy:

...Our information campaign...must...reassure the general public by dispelling fears that the coup is inspired by foreign and/or extremist elements, and to persuade particular groups that the coup is not a threat to them. The first aim will be achieved by manipulating national symbols and by asserting our belief in the prevailing pieties....

As Luttwak further explains, marginalizing whatever resistance might oppose the coup is equally important. By the same token, creating a sense of isolation and futility among oppositional elements is vital to prevent any possible unification against the coup.




Luttwak:

One of the landmark studies of the mechanics of coups d'etat was first published in 1968 by Harvard University. Coup d'Etat: A Practical Handbook was written by Edward Luttwak, a conservative scholar with a long career in the national security system. During the Reagan-era, he served as a "consultant" to the National Security Council and the State Department. Currently, Luttwak is senior fellow of "Preventive Diplomacy" at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think-tank with close ties to US intelligence. He is also a member of the National Security Study Group of the Dept. of Defense.
