Bush Declares Emergency As Democratic Opposition Names Gore President

Washington, 11 November 2004 (DU) -- President Bush has declared a state of emergency following what he called an attempted "coup d'etat."

In live televised comments Bush said, "We have to bring order to the country."

The announcement came after Democratic opposition supporters seized control of the government today after a week of protests against disputed election results.

Shortly after Bush's statement, the Democratic opposition declared Al Gore president.

Bush was earlier whisked out of the White House by bodyguards after demonstrators forced open the door of the chamber and stormed in as he was preparing a speech before the opening session of the newly elected Congress.

A Democratic leader told Congress, "The velvet revolution has taken place in America."

The Democratic opposition has been protesting the 4 November elections, which they say was rigged in favor of Bush through massive computer fraud in selected, critical states, including Florida, Minnesota, Pennsylvania , Ohio, Iowa, Arizona, Nevada, Missouri, Arkansas and Tennessee.

The Bush totals in these states defied the polls, which had Gore winning 53-47%. The Bush winning margin in each state was greater than the .5% spread required for a recount. Gore won the popular vote by over 2 million votes.

A voter-verified paper trail will not be required until 2006.
