20% is a good rule of thumb for the average meal. The tip should GO DOWN when the price of the meal goes up. At a certain point I switch to an hourly rate. If the meal costs $500.00, I will tip $20.00 per hour. The average $500.00 meal lasts 3 hours, so I think a $60.00 tip would be appropriate.
