They had to have shot the entire effects budget on cocaine.

Yes, the movie is a bit cheap looking but honestly they didn't have any money.

Hell, according to Boorman, on the DVD commentary, Connery pocketed the per diem they paid for a driver and drove himself to the set. But he is a Scot after all.:-)
