My take on the game plan around the Miers nomination

First and foremost, this is the perfect distraction. With virtually no judicial record, anything that can or will be found out about her will be of the 'conjecture', 'gossip', or 'half-truth' sort - eminently and endlessly debatable.

And debate they will .... not so much in the Senate as in the public square, aided and abetted by the Three Monkey Media. Their job will be to distract and enable. And they've shown time and again they relish the role and excel at obfuscation

The Kennedy/Schumer wing of the party will be painted as nutty loons representative of the liberal fringe of American society. The religious right will bleat in feigned outrage as they set the stage that the woman is not right enough. A moral equivalency will be set up pitting the ultraconservatives in the Democratic party against the far right of the Repubican party. Reason will never enter the debate.

In the meantime, all the ongoing bad news for the junta figureheaded by idiot son will fall off the radar. At least for a few days. Enough to get his numbers up. Enough to shore up their base.

They know all this and that's why she was nominated. They are also more than willing to allow her to excuse herself or to withdraw her nomination. If she makes it, then they win. A partisan in place. If she doesn't get approval, they still win.

Distraction.

That's the name of the game.
