60. There Was More To Mel Than That
Mel really was a good guy, and he could have really done big things had he lived. It's almost a shame that he'll be forever linked to Ashcroft when he deserves to be remembered in his own right. He won not simply because Ashcroft was so bad, but because Carnahan was that good.

I remember telling some workers where I shopped why I was planning to vote for Carnahan for governer. They agreed that it was important to vote Dem, and Mel sounded like the real deal. I remember after he won, and he kept his campaign promises, those same workers being excited that they had voted for him. These weren't political junkies, or even die-hard Dems - just pissed-off workers - and he managed to get these tired, hard-working people interested and involved just by doing what he said he would. I still miss him.
