In any truly civilized society, a racist comment would be looked upon as a sign of ignorance and poor breeding, as if the offender was a step behind in the evolutionary process. Although some would choose not to believe it, we are all racists and bigots to some degree underneath, but only the backwards let these thoughts float to the surface (as opposed to the phsychologically unbalanced, who march in rallies and commit violent hate crimes)

If a friend viciously insulted a family member (and that's pretty much racism in a nutshell), I think most of us would dispense with lawsuits and protests and merely give that friend the silent treatment for the rest of our lives. That's what I think we should do with Michael Richards, and that's pretty much what we were all going to do anyway.
