CHICAGO (AFP) – US President Barack Obama has offered a lesson in doorstep politics to 2012 campaign volunteers who fear getting into trouble when asked to discuss the intricacies of global diplomacy.

On a visit Wednesday to his hometown of Chicago the president told his helpers they did not need to know everything about his multiple policy platforms.

He used the example of divided Cyprus, an issue familiar to US foreign policy elites which is far less understood in the heartland.

"Sometimes it's not so bad to say, 'I don't know,'" Obama told a supporter who asked a general question about the campaign.
