Luckily I had finished my coffee or my screen would be trashed now.
I just listened to an analysis by Patty Culhane, AJE's correspondent at the State Dept. and it was acknowledged that this one is a sticky wicket for the gang in Foggy Bottom right now. Does not help to know the entire Arab world is watching how the US reacts to all of these various uprisings.
It was opined that they had leverage with Egypt due to the foreign aid splashed on their dictator for the last 30 years.
We do not have that relationship with Lybia, our only interest in them is their part in the terror campaigns and OIL.
Yup, today because it is a "holiday," in the US none of the experts asked thought anything would come out of Washington today. Even though the live firing upon unarmed protestors continues unabated in Tripoli. The correspondent and the experts further opined that we do have a strategic interest in Bahrain and that is the only reason Foggy Bottom came out with strongly worded warnings and even phone calls to the royal family we have propped up there for the last few decades. I did not know that the Bahraini thing went back to when Iran claimed it and the UN finally declared Bahrain an independent nation in the 70s. Ironic that is when we built the large naval base with the 6th Fleet there.
We can only hope that things work out in favor of the protestors in Lybia without any help from the US mainly because we have no leveraged influence there. Remember the entire Arab world is watching how we deal with these various and very different relationships we have with many in the oil patch of the middle east.
Another current concern is the flood of refugees from Lybia to neighboring states. The closest ones on land are worried but the one closest across the Mediterranean, Italy, is the only one compelled to react, as the refugees are flooding into Island states that are Italian possessions in the middle of the Med.
The Lybian delegate to the UN is now being interviewed, claiming he has always served the people there, never served the regime, etc. He is spinning but also sounds desperate. Claims he has had no contact with the regime, claims he is not worried about the regime's reaction to his speaking out. He is outraged his fellow Lybians are being gunned down. Says that Ghaddafi has to get out now, otherwise the Lybian people will take him out.
Wow! Getting close to the end for Moamar and family.
The Revolution will not be televised but it will be on Twitter.
