One main reason for appeasement of the Nazis in the 1930s, was that they were seen as opponents of communism.

In the 1980s, Reagan et al helped to build up the forerunners of the Taliban because they were against the Soviet Union.

Frankly, if I had only the choice in my country between a hardline communist takeover - NOT the same as socialism or even 'Eurocommunism', and a takeover by a group like the Tea Party - I would become an asylum seeker in another country! (Actually I am fortunate enough that I would not need to, as I have dual citizenship with Canada and would go there.)
