Edited on Fri May-12-06 02:36 PM by progmom

I say give him a chance to learn from his 2000 campaign mistakes. The man is intelligent, articulate, progressive, and passionate. There isn't another potential candidate out there who inspires me to the degree that he does.

What about you? Would you work for Gore in '08?

I would have to see his opposition and what he has to say to vote for him in a primary.

Edit: Only because it could potentially be a disaster to have him run again and I would be worried about the press reaction and citizen reaction too.

At this point, Al Gore is the *only* hope I have. In my opinion, none of the perceived candidates will be running for the right reasons.

Damn it! We desparately need a leader, not a politician. We've now seen what five years of politics can do to a country. It's time to find somebody to *lead* our country back from the very brink of catastrophe (if that's even possible now).

30. I'm supporting Hillary first
We have an unprecedented opportunity for a woman President, and don't you think it's a little past time for that?

People complain about a 'Clinton dynasty'. How does that ridiculous notion compare to a 'white guy dynasty' that has lasted 220 years? Which one of those needs to be broken more? Hard to figure, huh?

I think the world of Al Gore and would vote for him in a second. Planned on voting for him in 2000 and 2004 back in 1992!

If Al decides to run, and I think he will, and if he comes out on top of Hillary for the nomination, which I don't know how that will go, then I pray he picks Hillary for Vice-President.

I want her on the ticket one way or another.

61. Barbara Boxer? That's funny!
I like her but she's a complete unknown outside of political circles. You've got to be kidding.

Hillary has been on the national stage for 16 years and she's done brilliantly throughout. She'd win in a landslide if the election were held today.

I agree with Gore as my number one choice of all the guys running. Wes Clark doesn't have the political resume - he'd make a good VP. And Kerry just lost - the electorate needs time to get over that sort of thing.

Plus I've just always liked Al Gore personally and as a politician.

All of these people, including Barbara Boxer, are really good progressives.

I'll tell you what would happen if Hillary ran in '08...
She would carry California, New York, most of the rest of the northeast, and northern pacific states, other than that, no other state, be realistic for once. Most people in the flyover states, of which I live in one, will NOT elect Hillary as President, no way, no how, Boxer would do better BECAUSE she is unknown to most of those around here.

142. Hillary would win in a landslide if she ran today
Edited on Fri May-12-06 05:45 PM by Tactical Progressive
In 2008 who knows what the political landscape would look like.

I can say with just as much certainty that Hillary would carry the entire midwest and some of the south in 2008 as you can that she wouldn't.

You overestimate both the resistance to a woman President if a credible candidate were offered (it's still high, no doubt), as well as the dislike of Hillary (that's not high), and you underestimate the desire for change in the country now.

If Hillary ran today she'd win across the board. In 2008 she could still easily win in a landslide but if not, still win outright across the country.

You'll see once she starts running.

Since this topic is focused around Al Gore let me just say that I see the same situation for him.

Most here would say, yes its time to elect a woman president, but anyone but Hillary. It really is that simple, she is not liked around here, not personally, not politically. Your optimism is admirable but misplaced.

Maybe you missed it but there has been a pretty effective hate-campaign goin' on against Hillary for many years now. There are a lot of people out there who do not like her at all, whether they really know why or not doesn't matter.

Throw in the fact Hillary has done much to alienate the base and Voila! You have a landslide victory for un-named Republican.

229. I would vote for Hillary against any Republican I know but
she would be one of my last choices amongst Dems. I want someone who had the foresight to vote against the authorization to go to war or who expressed reservations from the beginning. The polls show that Bush's greatest weakness is the war. Most Americans have come to the realization that it was a bad move to invade Iraq.

I will have to keep my husband home. If I don't he will vote against her. I don't know why, but Hillary is a real turn-off to many people, and it doesn't have a whole lot to do with her politics or her sex. I guess the hate Hillary campaign of the last 15 or 20 years has sunk in, in addition to the fact that she just personally turns off some people. I'd vote for her but Gore is MY first choice.

76. Sure it's time
for a woman president but that has to be secondary to putting up the best candidate to deal with this mess. Practically speaking the time isn't right for Hillary. She was lucky to get into the Senate and is better off there. A woman could only get the presidency in the current political climate by default IMO. Americans at this point won't elect one. Can't risk it.

I'm going for Gore, assuming he will run.

100. I personally would like to see Feingold head a ticket...
... so I'd prefer him run in the primaries. I do like Gore a lot too though. I'd definitely support a ticket with both on it, though I could also get behind a Feingold/Clark ticket too.

I really want Feingold in a position where he could help steer "Clean Elections" public financing reform at a national level. I think he'd be the man to do it. If he could do it as a VP to Al, so be it, but I think it might take him heading the ticket to provide the leadership needed. That and civil liberties, and getting the appropriate investigations going as to what has been going wrong with all of the secret conspiracies that Bushco has been engaged in. Feingold would be the person to be demanding the right thing to be done. Think Gore would too though.

On the other hand, if there is anyone that can help us go on the right track for global warming and other parts of environmental reform we sorely need, Al is also our man too!

106. This time he shouldn't run on how he's "not Bill Clinton" as much...
Edited on Fri May-12-06 03:54 PM by calipendence
I think that hurt him last election. When he made a point to go after congresswoman Sanchez for scheduling a fundraiser at the Playboy mansion, presumably to make himself more look like he's NOT Bill Clinton, I think some people (myself included) were turned off by that move. He would have been better off just ignoring that and focusing on other issues that people wanted to hear about. It seemed like there were a lot of other "measured" stances that he took in the campaign that was posturing in that way instead of just trying to show what he himself was. It seemed like one of his best speeches was his concession speech after he handed the reins to Bush. He seemed to have a big weight off of his shoulders then and was acting more as himself then. It's too bad he wasn't more like that during the campaign. It might have made the difference that was needed.

I'm serious. I'm more than ready for an articulate, intelligent, educated, mature, competent, clear thinking adult as president.

Never really bought into that whole "Al Gore is boring" mantra anyway.

As above poster stated, I'm not sure what "mistakes" you were referring too. At the risk of inciting violence (gulp, sorry!) it seems that the people who thought "both candidates are the same" and voted for 3rd party were the ones who made the "mistake"!

As did the Supreme Court... and us supporters. Why weren't we out on the streets protesting stolen election?

A lot of people may not recognize it, but Gore is now the 800-pound gorilla for 2008. If he decides to run, he will be formidable. He was a strong VP, has executive and, he won the popular vote in 2000, he has strong convictions and (apart from the RW fringe) is widely seen as uncorrupted. Plus he would make a great president.

I'd like Bush's reign to be annulled.
http://www.whitehouse.gov/president/gwbbio.html
George W. Bush is the 43rd President of the United States. He was sworn into office on January 20, 2001, re-elected on November 2, 2004, and sworn in for a second term on January 20, 2005. Prior to his Presidency, President Bush served for 6 years as the 46th Governor of the State of Texas, where he earned a reputation for bipartisanship and as a compassionate conservative who shaped public policy based on the principles of limited government, personal responsibility, strong families, and local control.

He's the deceiver.

67. Sorry
First of all, the only reason Joe Lieberman is a national figure is that Gore picked him as running mate. This does not show good judgment of character.

Secondly, I still haven't forgiven him for letting Tipper and Susan Baker make a federal issue out of dirty words in rock songs, making common cause with the Talibornagain. We're not going to win by picking and choosing individual items out of the Bill of Rights. I want a candidate that's going to be just as solid on the First Amendment as the Fourth (or the Second). Gore isn't that candidate. Neither is Hillary, who called for a flag-burning amendment and talks trash about video games.

At this (admittedly really early) stage, I like Feingold.

He really spoke out strongly in favor of Hayden getting the CIA gig. That troubles me.. I like Clark, and had considered him with Gore for a good 2008 combo. Any background on why Clark would be so excited about Hayden? Perhaps we don't know everything about Hayden?

137. I think that Clark worked with Hayden in Bosnia and was vouching for
his character. Clark is not one to attempt to assasinate another's character "just for the sake of politics" or because it is "the cool thing to do" for the brownie points; no matter that his words on Hayden may be unpopular.

Clark has repeated time after time that the NSA activities need investigating, and he has always maintained that it is those at the top that need to be held accountable. That's why he is working so hard to have Democrats regain congress; cause then we can have "real" investigations.

In addition, Clark understands that until Bush is gone, no one that Bush will nominate for anything will be ideal, but based on Bush's past appointments which have been based on cronyism and most were generally unqualified individuals, Clark realizes that for whatever else his flaws, Hayden is at least qualified and competent to do the job. That's probably the most that he believes he can hope for at this point.

direction. If he is on the ticket, I will be his staunchest supporter. But then again, if Bill and Hill are on the ticket, I will be their staunchest supporter. Or Biden or Bayh or Edwards, etc. But what I won't do is to get into the republican trap that catches so many democrats; that is, "If the nominee isn't my personal favorite, then I just won't vote." I can think of no person who is so smart, talented, well liked, caring, and actually has a chance to win as Al Gore. Strike that - WILL WIN should he run. He won in 2000 when average people didn't know how terrrible Bush would be - so he will indeed win in 2008, should he run. I honestly believe he is a good man and would gladly campaign for him in 2008. :) :patriot:

He's smart, articulate, and experienced with the inside the Beltway BS. He isn't in the pockets of corporations, he understands the urgent, global need to deal with environmental issues, he knows the value of respectful diplomacy with other nations that can strengthen our standing in the world rather than weakening it, and I'm confident he can find a way to get us out of Iraq. I'm pretty sure he'd go back and deal with the mess we've left in Afghanistan (remember Afghanistan?) without playing shoot-em-up. He would take national security seriously without turning it into a citizen spying program. I'd sleep much better at night with any Dem in the WH, but if Al were on watch, I'd sleep like a baby. I'm with him all the way.

149. I would support him in the General Election if he won the nomination
But to be honest, the "old" Gore did not stimulate me into political activism, and saying that there is a "new" Gore is not the wisest thing to advertise IMO.

In reference to the primaries, I will have to see who runs. If the General doesn't run, but all of the other usual suspects do, Al Gore would certainly most likely get my primary vote. I believe that he would be more likely to win in the GE as opposed to Feingold (although I do like him quite a bit), and I certainly would prefer him over Clinton, Bye, Warner, Richardson or any other that I could think of.

I will vote in the '08 primaries based on who I think could win the General election based on the issues raised at that time.

PS: Has Al Gore stated where he stands on Iraq in reference to what we should do at this point?

Yes, I know Al Gore is intelligent and trustworthy, but in my opinion he has the same trouble Kerry did. He doesn't relate well to the common populace, and that is a BIG problem. Edwards seems to have more of the "common touch" and that could well be the difference this time around.

"The former US vice president and the former Goldman Sachs CEO launch a new investment firm whose research team fully integrates sustainability with fundamentals.

SocialFunds.com -- Sustainable and responsible investing (SRI), also known as socially responsible investing, has increasingly been gaining a toehold in the mainstream since the Institutional Investor Summit on Climate Risk at the United Nations co-chaired by former US Vice President Al Gore last year. Yesterday, Mr. Gore helped move sustainability investing a significant step forward, placing its feet firmly in the mainstream by launching Generation Investment Management, a firm that will fully integrate sustainability research into its fundamental equity analysis. 252. If Al were a true corporatist, he would never have empowered the people,
Edited on Sat May-13-06 01:16 PM by Uncle Joe
by championing the internet. A corporatist would not want the people to have a voice. You can praise your favorite leader or trash your favorite villain (including that nice picture of Bush shooting a bird) for all the world to see because Al thought you should be able to and fought for it. His reward for doing this, was to be trashed and slandered by the corporate owned MSM for taking some of their power and giving it to you. I guess this is why we have that old saying "no good deed goes unpunished". They wanted to remain the sole gatekeepers to the truth and the internet threatened their monopoly.

A good analogy of this would be the ancient Greek Mythological hero Prometheus, who stole fire from heaven for humankind huddling in the cold and dark. Zeus became so enraged at this loss of power, he had Prometheus chained to a rock where a vulture would eat his liver every morning only to have it made whole again at night for all eternity. All you have to do is substitute the words owners of MSM for Zeus, internet for fire, pundits for vulture, credibility for liver and Al Gore for Prometheus. This is why I will never abandon Al Gore for President.

206. Gore and Edwards together would be unbeatable.
They're both bomb-throwers now. They've both (Gore was ROBBED and so was AMERICA in 2000) learned that pansy assed campaigning (Edwards was muzzled by Kerry's team from what I've heard) adice sucks and will kick ass until the LAST LAST and very LAST and ALLLLLLLLLLL votes are counted.

Count me in.

Never ever "get over it"!

Fuck repukes who say that. FUCK THEM! They STOLE AMERICA in 2000. Enough is ENOUGH.

and what it would do to babs and georgie - I hope they choke to death on it if he wins.

That, and I think he was the far better candidate - far better than Kerry at least!

And compared to the last years - he's win in a LANDSLIDE!

218. The man we elected
Hell, yes!
You can count on me voting for (and working for) the Democratic nominee in 2008....even if it's Hillary.
In the primaries....
Gore vs Hillary? Gore! (which party is she in, anyway?)
Gore vs Kerry? Gore! (this time, one of you guys must call us to the barricades -- we would have gone there either time, you know!)
Gore vs Dean? Gore!
Gore vs Kucinich? Gore!
Gore vs Clark? Gore!
OK, a tough one: Gore vs Edwards? I want to see them go head-to-head first....I'm pledged to Edwards, but open to (re)conversion.
Who else?
Sharpton? Gore! (I really respect the Rev's courage and honesty, but, seriously, he can't win)
Vilsack the perfidious? No way. Gore!
Lieberman???? (Hang your head in shame, Joe Schmoe!) Gore!
Whats-his-name-from-Virginia? Duh. Gore!
Obama? Not ready. Gore!
I'm finding this a useful exercise to clarify my mind. Throw me some other "plausibles" to weigh.

220. You bet....And I like him now even better than before!
You know, it would only seem fitting to allowing the elected President in 2000 to finally be allowed to be in the White House. Then maybe this long nightmare that we have had to experience as a nation the last 5 years (and then by '08 for 8 long torturous years) can finally be healed. A wrong could be righted and he could prove himself for this nation after all.

233. ABSOLUTELY. We need a president who understands the urgency of global
warming. I supported Gore in 2000, when he was first elected president. He attempted to fight for his presidency, unlike the '04 candidate. He is one of the few Dems (Feingold and Conyers come to mind as others) who I am willing to put the time, money and effort that I did in '04 (I stepped away from my business and worked full time as a volunteer).

249. While holding my nose and despairing, yes.
Because I don't believe he learned anything since 2000. I think he thinks that the weakened Republicans will be pushovers, and therefore his tired old 2000 campaign and issues will work just fine.

Watch how quickly whatever Republican puppet gets the nomination pulls out the "Al Gore 'invented' the Internet" line. Watch how quickly they unearth the "Pinky and the Brain" cartoon that described him as a Winnie-the-Pooh character - "AlGore the Donkey" - from whom a never-ending stream of wind about "the information superhighway" emerges. See which comic actor on "Saturday Night Live" imitates that droning voice, that never raises in pitch or attains any urgency even if someone is mugging him in the alley.

And for those of you who don't think a candiate can be ridiculed into failure (those of you who forgot what happened to Dean, that is) watch for the armies of corporate-funded scientists that will deny his ecological stands with John Stossel-approved "corporate science."

There are still no candidates among the so-called "front runners" that have shown any courage, any righteous anger, any inspiring passion to get uncommitted people to register and vote for him or her. All they've got is the line that they're "not Bush." And that may get some votes, but not enough to provide change in both houses of Congress.

If you still have not heard it or read it in it's entirety, I beg that you do. You will feel inspired and uplifted to hear the unfettered truth in such an eloquent and passionate manner. The contrast between him and * and the world we live in and the world we might have lived in could not be any greater.
