Funny, People Don't Want ICE Concentration Camps In Their Towns -- Or Anywhere (Wonkette)

The language used by ICE/DHS is meant to blunt their true intentions. Calling a facility “Transitional Corrections” for example. Pushback has been bi-partisan.

“…residents in cities where ICE wants to try warehouse prisons have been fighting to block them, and in many cases, they’ve won — even in states where Donald Trump won in 2024.

Here are just a few:

* A Canadian company backed out of selling a warehouse in Virginia, following protests and local opposition, as well as a threat by Canada’s Green Party to launch a boycott of the company.

* After huge protests in Oklahoma City, the owners of a warehouse there decided not to sell a warehouse there to ICE, and Republican Mayor David Holt applauded the move.

* ICE dropped plans to warehouse up to 8,500 people in a Mississippi warehouse after Sen. Roger Wicker (R) complained about the plan directly to Kristi Noem, possibly while offering her a new blanket.

* In red, red Utah, the government of Salt Lake City is nonetheless Democratic, and Mayor Erin Mendenhall warned the owner of a warehouse that ICE’s plans to convert it into a prison would likely violate city code, as well as put a huge strain on the city’s water and sewer systems. There too, the owners of the warehouse said they had no intention of selling or leasing the building to DHS.

* After federal officials toured a large warehouse in Kansas City, Missouri, the city council passed a moratorium on construction of any non-municipal detention facilities in the cityuntil January 15, 2031. The owners of the warehouse initially said they had a “fiduciary duty” to consider an offer that had already been made on the building, but last week issued a statement that they’re “not actively engaged” with any prospective buyer for the property. The company also grumped that it normally wouldn’t comment on “potential transactions,” and that “baseless speculation, inaccurate narratives and serious threats toward our leadership, our employees and our families have prompted us to issue this statement.”

“Aspen Medical is recruiting nurses, dentists, pharmacists, radiology technicians for a “secure medical facility” in Merrimack. The setting is described as “Transitional Corrections,” although there is no mention of ICE. Medical teams “will be located within” the facility to screen “new arrivals.”

~snip~

Should Dems Boycott SOTU address?

I say yes.

“Senate Democrats are having discussions about whether to boycott the event and talked it over during a closed-door lunch this week, according to two people granted anonymity to share details of the private conversations. Some members of the caucus are currently expected to attend, though a swath is undecided.”

Personally, I’d like to see the solidarity. There’s nothing Chump says that anybody needs or wants to hear anyway.

ICE Expanding Rapidly Outside of Major Metro Areas

“Federal records obtained by WIRED show that over the past several months, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have carried out a secret campaign to expand ICE’s physical presence across the US. Documents show that more than 150 leases and office expansions have or would place new facilities in nearly every state, many of them in or just outside of the country’s largest metropolitan areas.

In many cases, these facilities, which are to be used by street-level agents and ICE attorneys, are located near elementary schools, medical offices, places of worship, and other sensitive locations.“

Alarming that the fascists are preparing invasion forces so close to our cities.

Alarms Sound On Under-The-Radar Trump Move To Pay Off Cops To Assist ICE

“…the American public is likely unaware of a program in place that allows local cops to take part in a “Task Force Model” offered by the federal government to supplement and assist ICE. The federal government is reimbursing the salaries and benefits (including perks like overtime and equipment) for these officers…”

“…at a certain point, you do what you're told to do by the people who are paying you and who are funding you…”

Organization "Fight Against Federal Overreach": Prosecutors From Across The US In Emergency Meeting Today in DC

Prosecutors from around the country are coming together in DC today to craft legislation that will hold the Feds accountable for constitutional violations within their respective states.

“The emergency meeting held by the new organization was unusual in more ways than one, with one Homeland Security official telling [Miles] Taylor that they couldn’t think of any historical precedent for such a gathering.

“When you see local prosecutors having to take on federal agents, you know we’re in uncharted territory,” the official told Taylor on the condition of anonymity. “This is a consequence of the administration’s abuses of power.”

Collective state action is the good news we need.

27 U.S. states say, "We stand together now or we fall separately later." Cooperative Legislation Among Blue & Red States

Cooperative legislation among states regarding Fed overreach first since 1814. List includes many Red States.

From DailyKos:

“Cora Neumann, a State Senator from my state of Montana, stood up today with legislators from 27 U.S. states to say, “We stand together now or we fall separately later.”  State Legislators came together—the first time since 1814—to take a stand against the federal overreach of the current administration’s lawlessness in their States. “The federal government has crossed a line.”

This is the message from 27 states, including ruby-red states like Missouri, South Dakota, North Dakota, Kansas and Tennessee.

All 27 States represented are coordinating legislation—85 bills “and counting” --to mandate transparency and accountability for federal operations, protect constitutional rights from warrantless arrests and racial profiling, guarantee States’ access to crime scenes involving federal agents, and establish consequences when federal agencies operate unlawfully.  “We are here to represent our constituents and our constituents say ‘No.’”

The states represented;

California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota (Host), Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Washington State, Wisconsin, District of Columbia”

I think this is a good sign.

Can Midterms Be Cancelled? Jamelle Bouie Says No

Bouie gives an explanation on the mechanics of how midterms are run.

Not to say there can’t be problems, some more serious than others, but states run their own elections and there are no electoral counts involved.

Antifa used to unmask neo-Nazis, now it's exposing ICE: 'Predators don't get anonymity

From The Guardian:

“The Pacific Antifascist Research Collective did not publicly share the methods it used to identify Gramlin, but I know its research to be reliable. Its activists follow exacting editorial standards, a tendency born from the desire to be trusted by their communities; any missteps can destroy the credibility of the whole project.”

Gramlin was the fed agent who sprayed chemical irritants directly into the eyes of a protester who was already down on the ground and restrained.

Donegan is an opinion journalist for The Guardian and my favorite writer on their staff. Here’s an introduction to her writing. I find her style to be clear and direct.
